Frederick Wall was the first son of Samuel Wall & Emma Slater born January 9th, 1880 at Wednesbury, Staffs.
In 1881 Frederick & his father & mother were living at 9 Oakeswell Rd, Wednesbury with his grandparents, Mary & William Slater.
The family were still living with the grandparents in 1891 at the same address. Frederick now had 2 sisters & 3 brothers.
By 1901 Frederick’s mother had died & he was living with his widowed father at Wellcroft St, Wednesbury. He was working as a socket maker. His grandmother Mary Slater was living with them & all his brothers & sisters were still at home. That year Frederick enlisted in the Royal Marines in Plymouth & gave his trade as a carpenter.
Frederick married Ruth Mary Chard on December 7th, 1905 at East Stonehouse Register Office, Devon. Ruth was born October 21st, 1882 at Farringdon, Devon, the daughter of Louisa & Isaac Chard, a farm labourer.
In 1911 Frederick & Ruth were living at 24 Market St, East Stonehouse, Devon & Frederick was a private in the Royal Marines Light Infantry. They had 4 daughters – Flora (4), Dorothy (3), Alice Rosetta (1) & Phyllis (8 months). Daughter Dorothy sadly died, aged just 5 in 1913.
Frederick served on the battleship HMS Goliath which sailed to the Dardanelles in 1915. On May 13th, 1915 the Goliath was torpedoed by a Turkish torpedo boat manned by a German & Turkish crew. Five hundred & seventy lives were lost, including Frederick. Further tragedy struck the family that year when their only son Frederick died, aged just 3.
Daughter Alice married Edward Searle in Oct-December 1932 in East Stonehouse, Devon & daughter Iris married William E Dolton in Oct-December 1933 also at East Stonehouse.
Daughter Patricia married Samuel George Eurylus Edwards on December 26th, 1936 at East Stonehouse & in 1939 they were living in Coventry where Samuel was a store houseman with the admiralty.
The 1939 register shows widowed Ruth living at 12 Wall on Market St, Plymouth, Devon.
Ruth died in 1940 in Plymouth, Devon.
